A former Minister of Petroleum, Prof. Jibril Aminu, was dead.
Aminu, a diplomat and a respected heart expert, died on Thursday in Abuja after a prolonged illness.
He is 85 years old.
The Governor of the State Adamawa, Ahmadu Fintiri, who announced the death of Aminu in a statement issued by its main press secretary, Humwashi Wonousikau, described the older statesman as a tall figure in “Nigerian intellectual and political landscape.”
Aminu obtained his medical degree from the University of Ibadan in 1965, where he won the best graduate student award.
He obtained a PhD in the field of medicine from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, in 1972.

The deceased served as Minister of Education and then Minister of Minerum and Mineral Resources under former Military President Ibrahim Babangida from 1989 to 1992.
Aminu was elected as president of the African oil producer organization in 1991 and also served as President of the OPEC Conference from 1991 and 1992.
He is the Nigerian ambassador to the United States from 1999 to 2003.
The older statesman served as a senator representing Adamawa Central from 2003 to 2011.
Before returning to the country to the Democratic government, Aminu was a delegation to the National Constitution Conference which was united by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, from 1994 to 1995.
