Fast and leave! Saraki told PDP members who were waiting to throw away the party

The former President of the Bukola Saraki Senate has stated a deep surprise and disappointment over the defending of the 2023 2023 Democratic Vice Presidential Candidates 2023 and the former Governor of the State Delta, IFEI Okowa, to the Congress of All Progressive (APC) in power.

Calling for decisive changes in the focus of the party, Saraki urged those who still want to leave the PDP to do it without delay, so that those who are determined to remain fully concentrated on rebuilding efforts.

Okowa, who was elected as a couple who nominated himself for the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, in the last general election, had caused controversy in the party at the time of his nomination, especially among party supporters such as Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of Territory of the Federal Capital (FCT). Wike openly expressed dissatisfaction after being ignored for that position.

In a development that made many political observers off guard, Okowa, along with his successor, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, and other high -ranking officials in the state of Delta, officially defected to APC earlier this week.

Reacting to a statement released on Friday, Saraki described Okowa’s move as “inappropriate and surprising,” added that it had never happened before for couples who were running from the candidates for major party presidential candidates to defect so quickly after the election. He rejected all efforts to rationalize actions by quoting political pressure, on the grounds that it was the opposite referring to the collapse of deeper leadership values in the country.

“This is just a sign of how low we sink as government,” Saraki said. “This development is the reason why I consistently encourage the strengthening of the institution above the height of the individual.”

Apart from the high profile defeat, Saraki remains optimistic about the prospects of PDP, maintaining that even with a number of governors, the party is still well positioned to compete and win the elections in the future. He convinced the loyal party that he and other committed leaders would continue to repeat the PDP into a strong opposition that was able to provide credible alternatives for the ruling party.

“My view is that those who want to leave the PDP must leave now and let us all concentrate on rebuilding the party and focusing it again to play a decent opposition role that provides a better alternative for the Nigerians,” he said.

Saraki stressed that functional democracy does not only depend on elections but on the availability of proper political choices. He warned of the dangers of floating towards a country of one party, especially in diverse societies such as Nigeria, emphasized that eliminating political alternatives could breed despair and instability.

“It is important for Nigerian democracy that opposition remains excited and able to replace the ruling party at any time,” he said. “Our current situation must be seen not as a bell of death, but as a rebirth for PDP.”

He encouraged party members to remain committed and focused, reminding them that political dynamics could shift quickly. “24 hours is a long time in politics,” Saraki said. “No one can predict how things will develop in the next few weeks and months.”

He suggested not to point to his fingers or blame the ruling party for the internal challenges of PDP. Instead, he asked members to take advantage of the moment to rebuild, strengthen the structure, and be connected again with voters.

“Maintaining democracy is not a sprint, it is a marathon,” Saraki concluded. “We should not be discouraged by events in the state of Delta. Our focus must be in the future -and restore hope to people both in Nigeria.”
