Father arrested for chaining and starving his 5-year-old son in Bauchi

Officers from the Bauchi State Police Command have rescued a five-year-old boy who was found chained and starved for three days by his father in the Gwallagan Mayaka area.

The arrest was made after a report from a concerned neighbor.

According to Bauchi State Police spokesman, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, in a statement on Thursday, the child, Hussaini Abubakar, suffered severe abuse at the hands of his father, Abubakar Nuhu, 50. The suspect allegedly locked his son up to prevent him from stealing from neighbors, claiming he was advised by a friend.

English: β€œOn July 3, 2024 at about 5:05 p.m., information was received from the ward head of Gwallagan Mayaka, Bauchi, that he received information from a good Samaritan, a resident of his ward, that his wife Amina (not her real name) informed him that she saw a 5-year-old boy from their neighbor tied up with chains inside a room located at the same address (Gwallagan Mayaka). He immediately checked on the boy to confirm and found the boy lying tied up with chains in an unconscious state,” Wakil said in a press release.

The rescue operation was led by CSP Mubarak Baba, who responded to an alert from neighbors and found Hussaini Abubakar chained and unconscious. The child told authorities that he had not been fed for three days.

Following an investigation, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad psc ordered the immediate arrest of Abubakar Nuhu on charges of child abuse. The commissioner stressed the seriousness of the offence and urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour to law enforcement.

The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation into the motive behind the harassment. Police also thanked the public for their vigilance and support in combating such crimes.
