Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after what the FBI says appears to be an attempted murder Sunday outside Trump’s golf course in Palm Beach, Florida.
According to law enforcement sources, shots were fired outside the camp.
Trump’s campaign had previously said the man was safe after gunshots were heard nearby, but did not provide details.
The Associated Press reported that U.S. Secret Service agents opened fire after seeing a gunman near Trump’s golf club, citing two unnamed law enforcement sources and adding that no injuries were reported.
Reuters was not immediately able to verify the report, which said the suspect fled in an SUV and was arrested in another county.
Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said his agency has arrested the suspect wanted by Palm Beach County, CNN reported.
The secret service said it was investigating the incident, which occurred shortly before 2pm (1800 GMT).
Trump sent an email to his fundraising list saying there had been “gunfire in my vicinity, but before rumors start spreading out of control, I wanted you to know first: I AM SAFE AND OK!” according to an email seen by Reuters.
Trump was wounded in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13, raising questions about candidate protections just months before what is expected to be a hotly contested Nov. 5 election in which he faces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

The White House said in a statement that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris had been informed of the incident and were relieved to know he was safe.
βViolence has no place in America,β Harris said in a post on social media X.
Reuters was not immediately able to confirm his story.
The Washington Post said Trump was golfing at the course when the incident occurred. Secret Service agents took him to a waiting room at the club, it said, citing two people familiar with the incident.
Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The first shooting of a U.S. president or major-party presidential candidate in more than four decades was a blatant breach of security that forced Kimberly Cheatle to resign as Secret Service director under bipartisan pressure from Congress.
Trump was grazed in the right ear, and a rallygoer was killed in the shooting. The gunman, identified as Thomas Crooks, 20, was shot and killed by a Secret Service sniper.
The new acting director of the U.S. Secret Service said in August that he was “ashamed” of the security breach that led to the assassination attempt.
