FCCPC to Meta: The threat of out will not stop you paying a fine of $ 220 million

The Commission for the Federal Consumer Competition and Protection (FCCPC) on Saturday told the United States -based technology company. Meta Platforms Inc. to comply with Nigerian law.

Meta, the Parent Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram companies, for a week threatened to close their operations in Nigeria for the large fines imposed by the commission.

FCCPC in July 2024 imposed a fine of $ 220 million on the company for violations of data privacy between May 2021 and December 2023.

In the statement issued. By its corporate affairs director, Ondaje Ijagwu, the Commission warned that Meta that his threat to leave the country would not stop paying fines.

That emphasized that no company operates in this country above the law.

The statement reads: “Interestingly, Meta has been fined for similar violations in Texas ($ 1.5 billion) and only recently was asked to pay $ 1.3 billion for violating the EU data privacy rules.

“In other places in India, South Korea, France and Australia, Meta has faced various punishment for the same violation. But Meta has never used extreme extortion to get out of those countries. They obey.

“This new confirmation on the final order of FCCPC by competition and the Consumer Protection Court requires party meta to take steps to comply with Nigerian law, stop exploiting Nigerian consumers, changing their practice to meet Nigerian standards and respect consumer rights, consistent with international best practices.”

“Threatening to leave Nigeria does not free the obligation meta for the results of the judicial process.”
