Fear grips Lagos residents as rumors spread of a cult clash

Residents of several communities in Lagos were gripped by fear and uncertainty on Monday, April 13, 2026, following the spread of a viral message warning of an impending cult-related clash.

In areas such as Shitta, Akerele, Itire/Aguda and Ishaga, many residents reportedly rushed home in a hurry, while others closed their shops early for fear of possible violence.

Parents were seen calling their children indoors, as tension quietly grew in neighborhoods already sensitive to security warnings.

“I had to close my shop immediately when I saw the message,” a trader in the Itire area told Blueprint.ng correspondent.

“We can’t take chances with matters like this. Safety comes first.”

Another resident in Shitta described the atmosphere as “uneasy,” noting that even unconfirmed reports can quickly trigger panic among residents.

Amid growing anxiety, the Lagos State Police Command acted quickly to quell tensions, dismissing reports as false while reassuring the public of their safety.

Police Commissioner Tijani Fatai said the command has already taken proactive measures to prevent any breach of law and order, including the rapid deployment of officers and operational assets to the affected areas.

According to him, intensified patrols, strategic placement of personnel and increased police visibility have been implemented at identified hotspots to deter any threat and reassure residents.

“There is no reason to be alarmed. Residents should carry out their lawful activities without fear,” the police chief said, stressing that security agencies remain fully on site.

The Command also warned against the spread of unverified information, warning that such rumors could unnecessarily increase tension and disturb public peace.

For many residents, however, the incident highlights how quickly fear can spread in a densely populated city like Lagos, where a single message can upend daily life within minutes.

As calm gradually returns to the affected communities, residents are urged to remain vigilant, verify information before sharing it and promptly report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

The Police have once again reaffirmed their commitment to protect lives and property, assuring Lagosians that all necessary measures are in place to ensure continued peace across the state.
