According to recent athletics reports, FIFA is studying the possibility of expanding the World Cup to 64 countries.
The 2026 edition has already increased to 48, giving more nations and players the opportunity to appear on the biggest football stage, which are the dreams of all players.
The idea of a 64 -team World Cup originated in a South American delegation, including the heads of State in Uruguay and Paraguay, together with the presidents of the Argentine, Paraguayan and Uruguayan soccer federations.
They formally asked FIFA to examine the viability of a 64 team tournament in 2030 to mark the 100 years of the first World Cup.
For South American nations, such expansion would increase its representation in the tournament.
Under the new format of 48 teams for 2026, six Conmeboly countries have described, including Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia and Paraguay.
Bolivia also has the opportunity when they end at the place of the playoffs.
An extension to 64 teams would also present more opportunities for African nations.
The representation of CAF has already grown from five in 2018 and 2022 to nine guaranteed places for the 2026 edition, plus a playoff slot.
Two African countries have sealed their place for next year’s global masterpiece, Morocco and Tunisia.
Only 13 nations of the 54 CAF members have appeared in a World Cup, which is approximately 24%.
A 64 team tournament would give more African sides, including those who had never described before, the opportunity to dream of the global stage.
It would also provide greater international exposure and greater income opportunities for the development of football throughout the continent.
