Finance Minister Wale Edun is reportedly on doctor-mandated bed rest in Abuja

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, is currently on medical rest in Abuja, a reliable source confirmed, following the announcement by the presidency that he would not lead the Nigerian delegation to the World Bank-IMF meeting in New York due to being “unwell.”

According to sources who revealed the information after spending time with the minister on Sunday, Mr Edun has been advised by his doctor to take a short break from his official duties so he can rest and recover fully.

“He is spending some time resting under medical supervision in Abuja,” the source said, adding that the minister is expected to “spend a few days away from work to fully recover and recharge before resuming his job responsibilities.”

Mr Edun, who has played a key role in the government’s economic reforms, has spent the past few months working hard to stabilize the economy following the removal of long-standing subsidies and foreign exchange controls that had hampered growth.

In a statement issued by the presidency on Sunday, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, announced that the Nigerian delegation to the World Bank-IMF meeting will now be led by the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Yemi Cardoso.

Onanuga said the delegation would also include Minister of State for Finance Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite who serves as Edun’s deputy. With both senior officials representing the country, Onanuga noted that there was “no reason to worry” about Nigeria’s representation at the high-level international meeting.

Although Edun is expected to resume his duties after his recovery, government officials have stressed that the country’s economic management remains on track, with reform efforts continuing under the coordination of financial and monetary authorities.
