Finidi George resigns as coach of the Super Eagles

After just two winless games at the helm of the Super Eagles, Finidi George resigned from his position as coach.

Former Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye verified his departure on his X account on Saturday.

Furthermore, a NFF A source who confirmed the development said that the federation is considering hiring a new coach for the team. Additionally, he suggested that the federation is studying the possibility of cutting the head coach’s salary.

After Portuguese tactician José Peseiro left the Super Eagles following the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the 53-year-old was introduced as the team’s coach in May.

Finidi took charge of the team on an interim basis during the March international break, leading the team to a 2-1 win over Ghana, before losing 2-0 against Mali in Morocco.

Last month, after an extensive meeting with the Nigerian Football Federation, Finidi George was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles and was immediately given sole responsibility for qualifying the team for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In two qualifying matches, the Super Eagles drew 1-1 against South Africa in Uyo, before losing to Gernot Rohr’s Benin Republic in Ivory Coast. The Super Eagles are now fifth in their qualifying group with three points from four matches.

With Nigeria’s qualification hopes up in the air, Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau says the Federation will take all necessary measures to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the United States. United States, Canada and Mexico.
