Finidi George resigns as coach of the Super Eagles

The head coach of the Nigerian senior team, Finidi George, has submitted his letter of resignation from his position to the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Owngoalnigeria.com understands.

Respected Nigerian journalist Tobi Adepoju broke the news in his hand on social media platform

His resignation comes on the heels of his demotion to the position of assistant coach at the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), which announced through official channels that it will be coached by an expatriate, following a disappointing performance in the recent World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria drew 1-1 with South Africa before losing 1-2 to Benin Republic. A result that dropped them to fifth place in their group, four points behind leaders Rwanda, which made their chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup lower than when Finidi was appointed coach.

His departure means the NFF will now intensify the search process for his successor and the team will return to action in September when qualifiers for the upcoming African Cup of Nations begin.
