Fire damages the birthplace of former East German leader Erich Honecker

A fire has damaged the birthplace of former East German communist leader Erich Honecker.

Honecker led East Germany as head of state and leader from 1971 until he was removed from power in 1989, shortly before the country’s collapse.

The house in the western German city of Neunkirchen suffered a fire late Tuesday in the roof and attic area that spread to nearby buildings.

Initial estimates by fire investigators put damage at around €750,000 ($801,000).

However, no one was injured in the fire; Investigation into the cause is still ongoing.

Honecker, who was born at home in Neunkirchen in the state of Saarland, on August 25, 1912, and died in 1994.

He only lived in Neunkirchen for a very short time.

The family moved to the neighboring district of Wiebelskirchen in 1913.
