Focus on electoral reform instead of rotating presidency, Obi spokesperson Tanko urges NASS

Principal Spokesperson, Peter Obi/Datti Baba-Ahmed of the 2023 Election Presidential Campaign Council, Alhaji Yunusa Tanko, said that reform of the current electoral process is much more necessary than the proposed single-term rotating president, to deepen democracy.

Tanko, former National Chairman of the defunct National Conscience Party, said this in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, and stressed that reforming the electoral process would ensure the emergence of credible leaders at all levels of government.

He further stated that deepening democracy to ensure the emergence of credible leaders must be one of the important things that needs to be considered in the ongoing process of amending the Constitution.

“This (single term of six years and rotating presidency) are things that the Nigerian people will decide when the time comes.

“Those are not things that should be the main topic of discussion right now.

“This is because what we really need now is to carry out electoral reforms that are in line with credible elections.

“Once we have that, we will talk about his tenure,” Tanko said.

The Labor Party leader further said that the National Assembly should not focus on tenure but on deepening the electoral process to promote democracy.

“Let’s reform the electoral system to make it clean and clear so that we can hold credible elections,” he said.

Ripples Nigeria reports that a bill seeking a six-year single term for the President and state governors was tabled recently by the 35-member House of Representatives.

The bill also addresses rotating the presidency among the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The 35 legislators, who fall under the umbrella of Reformed-minded Legislators, said both proposals would lead to reduced costs of government.

Member of Parliament Ikenga Ugochinyere, spokesperson for the group, added that the move would unite the country, ensure a smooth transition of power and promote the country’s development.
