Former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress, the party he joined in 2015 after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Aondoakaa, who until his resignation was a leading governorship aspirant in Benue State under the APC platform, made the announcement in a statement he personally signed and shared with newsmen in Makurdi, Benue State, on Sunday.
His resignation took effect on March 28, 2026.
He explained that the decision was the result of careful consideration and consultations with his family, his political associates and his supporters. While expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth of the party, he noted that the prevailing circumstances made the move necessary in the interest of his people and democratic values.
Aondoakaa also thanked President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and support to Benue State and acknowledged the role of George Akume in shaping the political landscape of the APC in the State.
Although he did not reveal his next political move, Aondoakaa called on his supporters to remain calm and assured them that a “new direction aimed at saving and repositioning Benue” will be communicated in due course.
The former AGF had earlier contested the APC governorship primaries in Benue in 2022, but lost to the current governor, Hyacinth Alia, and later unsuccessfully contested the result in court.
His resignation comes about two months after he participated in the APC membership electronic revalidation exercise, and speculations are rife that he may pursue the Benue governorship race in 2027.
