Former Gov Omehia encourages the devotion of power to the state

A former Governor of the State of Rivers, Celestine Omehia, on Tuesday called on the devolution of power to countries in the country.

He made a call at a press conference before the launch of his new book: “Nigeria Restructuring: The Way Forward,” in Abuja.

The launch of the book is scheduled for September 24.

The former governor stressed that the current system inherited from military government is not appropriate for a democratic government.

He argues that the power to decide on development projects and resource allocation must be handed over to states and provinces, not the federal government.

He quoted an example of road construction in Port Harcourt, said that the local community was in a better position to determine their needs.

Omehia called for the involvement of all stakeholders, including representatives of the people, in the process of any constitutional restructuring.

He said the 2014 Constitutional Conference conducted by former Goodluck President Jonathan’s Administration was a step in the right direction.

He, however, stated regret that the conference recommendations were not applied by the government in a row in this country.

“By providing a platform for dialogue, the launch of this book aims to unite the stakeholders to discuss the future for the country.

“By advocating for decentralization and devolution of power, I hope to trigger national conversations on how to create a fairer and more effective government system,” said the former governor.
