Former NSCDC official sentenced to life in prison for Ekiti rape

Justice Lekan Olatawura of the Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti, on Tuesday sentenced former Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) official, Olukayode Dayo, to life imprisonment on rape charges.

The 39-year-old convict was charged with one count of rape on March 13, 2022.

He was charged with desecrating a 13-year-old girl in the state.

Prosecutor Julius Ajibare told the court that the offence was contrary to section 31(2) of the Child Rights Act, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

He called six witnesses and submitted the defendant’s statement, photographs of the victim and medical reports as evidence.

The accused, who spoke in his defence through his legal counsel, Oluwaseun Oyebanji, denied committing the offence.

He appealed to the court to provide justice with mercy and not to present witnesses.

In his ruling, Judge Olatawura said the victim consistently proved that the defendant raped her.

He said: “Overall, I find the evidence beyond reasonable doubt that the accused raped the 13-year-old girl on December 25, 2021, and consequently, I find him guilty as charged.

“As a result of the above, the defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment.”
