Former Senate President, Pius Anyim, on Saturday edged out the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State.
He switched to the APC along with some of his supporters during the final leg of the APC campaign for the local government elections in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), joined the ruling party alongside the PDP governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections in Ebonyi State, Senator Obinna Ogba and the candidate of the Labour Party, Chief Edward Nkwegu.
In addition, a number of former members of the National and State Assemblies and former local council chairmen from the opposition camp defected to the APC.
In his remarks, Anyim said Ebonyi had always been a single political family and the massive defection of opposition members to the party proved this.
The former Senate President said his plan to join the APC had been in the making for a long time.
He said: βWhen I wanted this to happen, former Governor Dave Umahi was not ready and when he wanted it to happen, the outcome was not what we wanted.
βHowever, we thank God that everything went smoothly because now we are all under one roof.β
The former SGF said the defection did not only concern him but also the people of Ebonyi as extensive consultations were carried out before the final resolution was taken.

βWe wish to appreciate the great work of Governor Francis Nwifuru and reconcile the various political divisions in the state, bringing them under one roof.
βWe recognize the magnitude of the economic and socio-cultural challenges facing the country and the need to provide patriotic support to President Bola Tinubu to overcome these challenges.
βWe intend to collaborate with all federal officials from the state, especially the Minister of Public Works, Umahi, to support and stop President Tinubuβs policies aimed at improving the lives of Ebonyi people,β Anyim added.
APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, commended Governor Nwifuru for sustaining his predecessorβs ambition to expand the APC in the state and the South East.
βAPC is currently demarginalizing the South-East zone by placing it in the mainstream of national politics.
βThe ministerial posts among other appointments given by President Tinubu to the indigenes of the area, massive infrastructural development in the area among others, attest to this fact,β he said.
