Recently retired Ipswich Town striker Sone Aluko has taken on the role of first-team coach at the club, it has been announced.
The 35-year-old, who has been capped seven times by Nigeria in the top flight, has scored twice. He hung up his boots at the end of last season, having scored four goals in 62 games for the Blues at the end of a playing career that included spells at Rangers, Hull, Fulham and Reading.
He was one of 10 Town players to begin a tailored UEFA B coaching course run by the PFA last year and spent much of last season assisting the analysis team.
Commenting on today’s announcement, Aluko said: “It is a real privilege to begin the next stage of my career by joining the first-team coaching staff here at the club.
“Learning from the manager and the whole coaching staff is a fantastic opportunity for me. It’s a great time to be at Ipswich and I’m looking forward to helping the team continue to learn and rise to the challenge of the Premier League.”
Head Coach Kieran McKenna said: “We are delighted to add Sone to our coaching team. His work ethic and values have been important to the club over the last few years, and we know he will continue to bring those qualities to his new role. Sone has strong relationships with the players and staff at the club and will be a great addition for us.”
