At least four people were killed and eight more wounds after an armed man guided a vehicle in a Michigan church, opened fire and gave the first people the building, says the police.

The officials said that the attack on the Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints of the last few days in Grand Blanc, a city of 60 miles (100 km) north-west of Detroit, took place during a Sunday service in which hundreds of people was attended.

The suspicion, identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40 years old, from Burton, in Michigan, was subsequently killed with a gunshots by the police in the parking lot of the church.

The authorities are investigating the accident as a “targeted act of violence”, but they say that the reason remains unclear.

Two victims died from the firearm wounds, the chief of the Grand Blanc Township William Rennye said on Sunday at a press conference.

Later he said that two other people had been found death and “some” others remained not accounted for, even if he could not say how many. The church was still “liberated” on Sunday evening after suffering a large damage to fire, he said.

Head Renye said that “hundreds” of people were attending services about 10:25 local time (15:25 GMT) when an reinforced man led a vehicle in the building.

The striker then opened the fire with an assault -style rifle, “shooting several rounds against individuals inside the church,” he said.

The police immediately replied to the scene, he said, adding officers “engaged in shots with that particular individual, neutralizing that suspicion”.

Sanford was killed at 10:33 local time, eight minutes after filming.

“We are still trying to determine exactly when and where the fire ended and how it started,” said the police chief.

The suspicion had used an accelerant – most likely petrol – to start the fire, the authorities said.

Capo Renye also praised the “heroism” of the faithful who said he protected the children in the church during the accident.

Investigators are leading a search for the ownership of suspicion and examining his records of cell phones while working to establish a reason.

The registers show that Sanford was a veteran of the Marines Corps, according to what reported by the American partner of the BBC CBS.

The FBI is conducting the investigations and has deployed Team of response to crises, bomb technicians and others on the scene, according to Reuben Coleman, the special actor responsible for the FBI Detroit field office.

The Michigan Kim Vetter State Police spokesman told journalists that the agents responded to further threats of bombs to more locations.

“We replied and deleted those positions,” he said.

In a declaration, the Church of Jesus Christ of the Saints of the last few days has confirmed an armed man opened fire during the cult services and “more people were injured”.

“We pray for peace and healing for all the subjects involved,” he said.

Grand Blanc police said that 100 FBI agents were lined up to help with the investigations.

President Donald Trump said he was informed about the shooting and confirmed that the FBI will guide federal investigations.

Writing on Truth Social, he described it as “another attack aimed at Christians in the United States of America”.

The US Prosecutor General Pam Bondi said in an X post that he received briefing on “What seems to be a horrible shot and fire” in the church.

“This violence in a place of worship is excruciating and chilling,” said Bondi.

“Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy.”

The governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer condemned the accident, saying: “Violence everywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable”, adding that he was monitoring the situation.

Mitt Romney, former senator of the United States for Utah and one of the most important Mormoni politicians, defined the shooting a “tragedy”, adding: “My brothers and sisters and their church are targets of violence. Pray for healing and comfort.”
