Fresh strikes look like a doctor giving the Nigerian government 30 days of ultimatum to overcome demands

The Nigerian Resident Doctor Association (NARD) has issued a new 30 -day ultimatum to the federal government to resolve welfare concerns and policies that have long influenced its members.

The association warns further industrial actions if the problem remains not handled.

Ultimatum, contained in the communication signed on Sunday by President Nard, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman; Secretary General, Dr. Shuibu Ibrahim; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Ibrahim, attended the 45th Annociation of the Association, which was held in the state of Katsina from 21 to 26 September.

The main demands include payment of unpaid salary arrears, the release of the accumulation of promotional rights, the implementation of the joint negotiations, and the recovery of five new doctors was dismissed at the Federal Education Hospital, Lokoja. Nard also called for a direct completion of the corrected professional allowance, arrears from a review of medical salary structures (Conmess) 25/35 percent, and equipment allowances 2024.

The association condemned calls that were not safe and excessive, directing members, effectively October 1, 2025, to stop involved in more than 24 consecutive tasks, in line with the best international practice. Furthermore, urged the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare to develop clear regulations on doctor’s working hours.

Expressing concerns over the worse brain disposal, poor hospital infrastructure, and the casualization of medical professionals, Nard also demands the inclusion of DPR officers in a civil service scheme, fast salary payments, implementation of specialist allowances, and the process of decentralized promotion and training.

Communike further rejects the creation of consulting cadres for non-medical doctors and criticizing the decline in the ranking of postgraduate membership recognition. This asks the Medical Council and Nigerian Gigi to restore the recognition of the West African Postgraduate Membership Certificate and urged the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to immediately issue a Membership Certificate for Candidates who meet the requirements.

Regarding state-level problems, Nard urged the Governor of the State Oyo, Seyi Makinde, to immediately overcome the welfare of the population doctor at the Lautch Hospital, Ogbomosho.

The GMS, entitled “Mitigation of Migration of Health Workers through Extra-Bijak Incentives: Strategies for Sustainable Development”, also marked the transition of leadership, with Dr. Suleiman replaces Dr. Osundara Top as President.

The association promised to intensify involvement with the National Assembly to ensure adequate health care funding in the 2026 APROPRISI Law, emphasizing that the failure to fulfill its demands in the 30-day timeline will leave it without choice but to reconsider industrial actions.
