Fresh trouble for Yahaya Bello as Nigerian government moves to charge former governor over alleged N110.4 billion fraud

The Federal Government has filed fresh criminal charges against former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, at the Federal High Court, Abuja, TheCable reports.

In a charge sheet seen by the news platform on Wednesday, the former governor will be arraigned on 16 counts of criminal breach of trust amounting to N110.4 billion alongside two state government officials, Abdulsalami Hudu and Umar Oricha.

The offence, according to the government, contravenes sections 96 and 311 of the Criminal Code Act Cap.89 of the Law of Northern Nigeria, 1963, and is punishable under Section 312 of the same law.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Eradication Commission (EFCC) had earlier filed 19 counts of fraud against Bello in the same court.

The commission alleged that the former governor had diverted Rp80.2 billion of state government funds during his tenure.

However, Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned the case until October 30 when the hearing of the matter resumed on Wednesday.

This follows a report by one of Bello’s lawyers that his client had appealed the decision to charge him to the Supreme Court.
