Gian Piero Gasperini confirms that Adela Lookman was replaced due to a misunderstanding against Lazio.
He suffered a loss of 1-0 at home against Lazio on Sunday. In the second half, striker Star Lookman was mistakenly attributed, causing confusion.
“There was an error. Only Retegui was subtitled to leave,” Gasp told Dazn (through Football Italia) after the game.
“Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding between ‘Ede’ [Ederson] and ‘ADE’ [Lookman] And we pay a high price for it.
The Atalanta team manager misunderstood GASP’s instructions, replacing the Nigerian striker instead of the Brazilian midfielder.
Gasperini had said at yesterday’s press conference that he thought that talking about his ‘collapse’ was exaggerated, but this was his third consecutive defeat, everything without scoring a single goal against Inter, Fiorentina and Lazio.
“I think the team made a solid performance against a hard opponent,” Gasp continued.
“Trials are always based on the result, which does not reflect how the game really was.
“There are seven games left. We can still achieve what we do not handle in the last three games if we play with the same intensity, spirit and desire to obtain a result. In football, you have to accept moments like this and answer. Everything is possible.”
Gustav Isaksen left the bench and was decisive, since Fisayo Dele-Bashiru knocked the long pass Christos mandas so that his teammate seal the result of 1-0.
“There is nothing to blame in terms of efforts and performance of the players.
“It was not easy to keep Lazio under control for so long and put on a similar screen. We have been struggling to score lately, and when opponents score on their first chance, the whole game is committed. It is difficult to accept, but this is football.”
After having been in the Scudetto race until a few weeks ago, Atalanta are now nervously looking at their shoulders in the persecution package if they want to hold on to third place. They are also without a single victory at home in Serie A in 2025.
Gasperini said previously that he would not extend his Atalanta contract beyond June 2026, so Dazn asked if he had changed his mind.
“It is not the right time to talk about this after that game,” concluded the head of Atalanta.
“We have seven remaining games, and this is the most important thing. The rest is certainly less important.”
