GOL and partners host young people

The Government of Liberia and its partners have recommitted to working together to prioritize youth development in the country.

Ganta, Liberia, August 29, 2024β€”The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, UNFPA, UN Women, UNDP, and the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA), have jointly agreed to support youth development across the country.Β 

The partners say they are willing to work with young people to get them involved in positive behaviors and activities that will put them on par with youths worldwide.Β 

The Deputy Representative for the United Nations PopulationΒ Fund (UNFPA), Leonard Kamugisha, and the Youth and Sports Minister pledged to support youth development activities in Liberia.Β 

According to them, no nation can develop without the involvement of its young people.Β 

The UNFPA Deputy Representative told reporters that, along with partners, UNFPA has supported youth empowerment and development in this country since 1979 and will continue to do so.Β 

Young people from all 15 political subdivisions of Liberia recently converged in Ganta, Nimba County, to discuss issues that affect them.Β 

The Liberia National Youth Consultation Summit was held under the theme β€œOur Voice, Our Aspirations, Our Future.” 

They discussed issues such as drug abuse, unemployment, lack of skills training opportunities, and public facilities, among others.Β 

Nimba County coordinator for the YMCA, Madam Jamesetta Monah Cooper, told the gathering that huge population of young people across the country are being affected by drugs, stressing an urgent need for intervention.Β 

Banica Elliott, of the Federation of Liberian Youths, Jamiama SayJue Tweh from the Mano River Union Youth Parliament were delighted in seeing partners coming together to support youths’ initiatives and issues affecting them. Editing by Jonathan BrowneΒ
