Gonzalez footballer killed in Ecuador

Armed men killed Ecuadoran footballer Jonathan Gonzalez in the South American country.

The police confirmed the killing of the footballer on Saturday, saying that Gonzalez was killed on Friday.

His murder marks the third murder of a footballer in Ecuador since the beginning of September.

The authorities said that the 31 -year -old player, nicknamed “Speedy” Gonzalez, suffered “firearm wounds” in an attack inside a house in the coastal province of Esmeraldas, who borders Colombia and is plagued by rival drug bands.

The police did not specify a reason for crime.

A second victim, who was not identified, died while running to the hospital.

Ecuador is immersed among the largest cocaine producers in the world, Colombia and Peru, and has become the starting point for 70 % of the worldwide supply of drugs.

With an influx of bands, the murder rate rises from six per 100,000 people in 2018 to a maximum record of 47 in 2023, before immersing yourself at 38 last year, she reported AFP.

Two players from the ExaPromo Costa FC second division team, Maicol Valencia and Leandro Yepez, were affected in an armed assault in the south-western coastal city of Manta on September 10.

Valencia died in the shots, while Yepez sold to his wounds two days later.

The club said the players were victims of a direct attack on another target.

A player for the second division team 22 De Julio FC, Jonathan Gonzalez had previously played Olimia in Paraguay and Leon in Mexico.

The Ecuadorian football federation and the local clubs have expressed condolences to the player’s family.
