Gov Niger, Gov Bago, extending pregnancy leave to six months

State Governor Niger Mohammed Bago has approved an extension of pregnancy leave for female workers in the state from three to six months.

The announcement was made during the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government Building in Minna. Governor Bago explained that the decision was intended to enable new mothers to care for themselves and their newborn babies, in harmony with the best global practices about maternal and child health.

“This policy is not just about work break time,” said the Governor. “This is about protecting the mother, giving the best baby in life, and ensuring that when our women return to work, they do it healthier, happier, and more productive.” He directed the Head of Service, Abubakar Idris, to develop modalities for the smooth implementation of policies in all state workers.

After the meeting, the Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, gave direction to journalists about additional initiatives approved by the council, including the procurement of 23,000 seats for general elementary and secondary schools. This initiative, worth N1.3 billion, is expected to improve class conditions and learning experiences throughout the state of Niger.

“This intervention is part of a broader educational reform strategy of Bago administration,” Mamman noted, “And that will directly overcome the shortage of critical furniture in our public school.”

In related development, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Trade and Investment, Hamza Bello, announced plans for a compressed natural gas factory worth $ 200 million (CNG) which will be established in Lambata. The project, he said, was waiting for the formal signing of a memorandum of understanding and projected to significantly improve energy infrastructure and create jobs in the state.

Bello also revealed that 350 shops will be built in the Suleja International Market and Taman Motor that has long been abandoned, a step that is expected to exhale back to the economy in the region. In addition, he confirmed the plan to revive the inactive Niger fertilizer company, which had played an important role in supporting agricultural productivity throughout the state.
