Gov Plateau condemns new violence, promising justice for the victims

Governor Caleb Mutfwang from the State of the highlands has condemned a series of new violent attacks in the state, stating that the murder should no longer be characterized as a mere clash between shepherd and farmers.

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday during a briefing with indigenous country, the governor described the situation as a deliberate and sustainable genocide campaign to the original highlands community.

Overcoming the meeting, Governor Mutfwang expressed his determination to seek justice for victims of attacks, swearing that those who were responsible would not escape the prosecution. “We will no longer allow those who carry out cruelty in our community not to be punished,” he said. “Anyone who is found has shed the blood of innocent people will face the full consequences of the law.”

The governor spoke against the background of the March 28 attacks in the Bokkos and Bassa Regional Government, of which more than 50 people, including children, lost their lives in the attack coordinated by the shepherd suspects. Although there are suggestions to postpone the meeting due to tragic events, Mutfwang said the decision to continue was made after a broad consultation with community leaders both inside and outside the state.

He remembered that the highlands had experienced relative peace for more than a year after the December 2023 attack, and had begun to rebuild his reputation as a “peace and tourism house.” However, he said that the new wave of violence seemed to be a calculated effort to disrupt the community right when the agricultural season began.

“These attacks are clearly strategic. They are not acts of random violence but are regulated by efforts to intimidate and impoverish our people,” Mutfwang said. “Let it be known that we will not be hindered. The highland people will farm this year. There is no acts of terror that will prevent us from processing our land and harvesting our future.”

The governor expressed his gratitude for the widespread solidarity and condolences received from all over the country. He also revealed that extensive consultation had occurred with the heads of national security and convinced residents that comprehensive steps were taken to protect life and property.

March 28’s attack marked one of the deadliest attacks on the highlands of the highlands, re-lighting concerns will increase violence in an area that has long been disturbed by ethno-religious conflicts and related to land.
