Governor Bala of the PDP is on edge, as the APC Bauchi caucus rejects attempts to join the party

A move by one of the two remaining Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors to foray into the All Progressives Congress (APC) has met with resistance.

The APC caucus in Bauchi State has vehemently rejected the move by the state governor, Bala Mohammed to join the party.

The caucus stated its position in a conference on Tuesday evening following a meeting held in Abuja.

Mohammed reportedly initially showed interest in defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the heat of the crisis that appears to have crippled the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

His change of heart followed the visit of the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, together with Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the Bauchi Government House, where they held a closed door meeting with him.

Although the two parties did not speak to journalists after the meeting, sources indicated that the visit may have been aimed at persuading the governor to reconsider his plans to join the ADC and instead join the APC.

Speaking after the caucus meeting, the senator representing Bauchi North Senatorial District and Chairman of the Bauchi APC caucus, Sama’ila Dahuwa, said members unanimously decided to reject Mohammed’s proposed entry into the party.

According to him, the caucus, after careful consideration, “firmly rejects” the move.

The caucus expressed concern that Mohammed had consistently made public statements critical of President Bola Tinubu, as well as the APC, including statements deemed to be detrimental to the unity and integrity of the party.

It was noted that the governor did not retract the statement or make any formal reconciliation efforts or public apology to the party leadership and members.

“In view of the above, the caucus is firmly of the opinion that his entry into the APC at this time will be detrimental to the cohesion, credibility and electoral prospects of the party in Bauchi State,” Dahuwa said.

The caucus further stated that it would not support any action that could jeopardize the stability and political fortunes of the party.

They also criticized what they described as a failure to consult with key stakeholders within the Bauchi APC on matters of political importance, and described such negligence as inconsistent with the principles of internal democracy and inclusiveness.

The caucus said it would formally communicate its position to the party’s national leadership and demand strict compliance with legal processes and established party structures.

Meanwhile, Mohammed has reportedly held consultations with PDP loyalists and stakeholders in the state.

It is learned that at a stakeholders’ meeting held on April 4, 2026, the PDP in the state constituted an exit committee to review its political future amid growing speculation regarding the possible defection of the governor.

Bauchi State PDP Chairman, Samaila Burga, confirmed that the committee was set up to assess available options and explore the possibility of leaving the party as part of a broader political realignment.

He said that the committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau, consisted of representatives from the National Assembly, State Assembly, commissioners, party officials and heads of regional governments.

Burga added that the committee will consult widely before presenting its recommendations at the next stakeholders’ meeting, where a final decision on the party’s political direction in the state will be taken.
