Governor Fintiri promises to complete Yola Stadium by March 2025 and empower the youth

The Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Hon Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has pledged to complete the construction of a world-class stadium in the state capital, Yola, by the end of March 2025.

This promise was made during a meeting on Thursday with a delegation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), led by its President, Ibrahim Musa Gusau, at the Government House in Yola.

Governor Fintiri expressed his administration’s unwavering dedication to the project, emphasizing its importance to the youth and the community at large.

“My administration has always been committed to building a suitable stadium for the benefit of our teeming youth population in this state and the country at large. Your arrival will definitely accelerate the pace of this project,” Fintiri said.

He stressed the importance of the stadium as a tool to combat poverty, youth unrest and juvenile delinquency. “Building the stadium is our way of fighting poverty, youth unrest and juvenile delinquency. We know that when young people have means of empowerment and positive spaces to channel their energy, all kinds of vices and mischief are drastically reduced in a society,” the Governor added.

Governor Fintiri also invited the NFF delegation to visit the construction site and urged them to provide feedback and suggestions on the ongoing project to ensure that it meets the highest standards. “We ask them to visit the site and advise the government appropriately on the aspects that we have omitted or not properly established, so that we can amend and incorporate those observations into the project.”

Responding, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau commended Governor Fintiri’s efforts in various sectors and expressed optimism over the timely completion of the stadium. Gusau highlighted the challenges facing Nigerian football due to inadequate stadium infrastructure, noting that only the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo currently meets the standards to host international matches. “His commitment to completing the stadium here in record time will help Nigerian football and will ultimately become a magnificent legacy of his administration,” Gusau remarked.

Gusau further highlighted the unifying power of football and its role in youth engagement, and assured the governor of the support of the NFF in providing technical advice as the project progresses. He also recommended that Governor Fintiri sponsor an under-17 football championship in Adamawa State, which would be organised by the Adamawa State Football Association to identify and nurture young talent.

The new Adamawa Stadium complex had been ignored by three consecutive administrations in the state. Governor Fintiri’s renewed commitment to this project marks a significant step forward in addressing the long-standing need for a modern sports facility in Yola.

The meeting was attended by prominent officials including the Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, Alhaji Auwal Tukur; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Edgar Amos; the Honourable Adamawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barr. Yakubu Wali; and several representatives of the NFF and regional football associations.
