Governor Yusuf abolished Kano higher education ministry, removed dep gov as commissioner

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has dissolved the state’s Ministry of Higher Education, a move that effectively removes his deputy, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, from his role as commissioner overseeing the ministry.

The decision is part of a broader restructuring of education administration in the state, under which defunct ministries will be merged with the state Ministry of Education to simplify operations and strengthen coordination across the sector.

In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature, the government explained that the restructuring was intended to accelerate reforms and improve education management in the state.

Under the new arrangement, functions previously handled by the Ministry of Higher Education will be managed through a special Directorate of Higher Education in the Ministry of Higher Education.

According to the statement, “The Directorate will be headed by the Permanent Secretary and supported by the necessary personnel to ensure effective management of higher education institutions in the state.”

He added that the restructuring would also return several institutions previously under the abolished ministries to the Ministry of Education.

“In this restructuring, all institutions under the Ministry of Higher Education that no longer exist, such as the Scholarship Agency, will return to the Ministry of Education, while state-owned universities and other universities will also be supervised by a new Directorate under the merged ministry.

“This move is part of the Education sector reforms that the state government is undertaking, which aim to reposition the sector, eliminate duplication of responsibilities, improve policy coordination at all levels of education and reduce governance costs,” the statement added.

Governor Yusuf noted that the changes were designed not only to simplify administrative functions but also to increase transparency and efficiency in the education system.

He reiterated that the restructuring would help reduce governance costs while strengthening accountability and improving the overall quality of education management in the state.

The governor also directed the state’s highest administrative offices to immediately begin implementing the new structure.

“Therefore, the Office of the Secretary to the State Government and the Office of the Head of Service have been directed to ensure immediate and smooth realignment of the affected ministries and their respective departments,” the statement said.
