Gulf of Guinea insecurity: NIMASA, Chatham House to engage UN Security Council

Concerned about the growing insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, the Nigerian Maritime Safety and Administration Agency, NIMASA, and London’s Chatham House jointly decided that the issue should be raised with the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this month.

This highlights the progress NIMASA has made in combating piracy and sea robbery in the region.

The decision was reached in a session between Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, and Dr. Alex Vines, Director of Africa Programme at Chatham House, accompanied by his team. Nigeria’s Alternate Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization, Bwala William was present on Sunday at Chatham House in London.

Speaking immediately after the meeting, the NIMASA Director General stressed the importance of effective international partnerships to maintain security in the Gulf of Guinea.

“We have had discussions with the team at Chatham House. The decision to involve the UN Security Council is to ensure they are well informed about the progress made so far on security in the Gulf of Guinea. We also need an independent analysis of the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea and how best to translate the gains in security into tangible economic benefits such as reducing the cost of all freight to Nigeria and the ongoing problem of paying war risk insurance premiums for ships bound for Nigeria. The inclusion of Chatham House will be a catalyst in developing our Blue Economy,” Mobereola said via his official account @MobereolaD on Sunday.

The agency and Chatham House have also begun collaborating to convene a meeting of international stakeholders from the public and private sectors in Nigeria, with the aim of developing a position paper on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
