Manchester City have re-signed former captain Ilkay Gundogan from Barcelona on an initial one-year contract, with the possibility of extending it for a further 12 months.
The German midfielder, who was Pep Guardiola’s first acquisition in 2016, played for City for seven years before moving to Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023.
During his first stint at the Etihad, the 33-year-old won 14 trophies and scored 60 goals in 304 appearances.
βMy seven years at Manchester City have been incredibly rewarding for me, both on and off the pitch,β said Gundogan, who captained City when they won the Treble in 2023.

βEveryone knows the respect I have for Pep β he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player.
βHonestly, I can’t wait to wear the City shirt again.β
Despite Gundogan’s impressive first season in Spain, Barcelona opted to part ways with him due to difficulties registering new signing Dani Olmo, caused by the club’s financial problems.
As one of Barcelona’s highest earners, Gundogan’s free transfer would help the club meet La Liga’s spending restrictions.
