Gunmen kidnap 4 cocoa farmers in Oyo

Gunmen on Wednesday kidnapped four Cocoa farmers at the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) in Idi-Ayunre area of ​​Ibadan, Oyo State.

The victims were at the institute for a familiarization visit when they were kidnapped by a six-member gang.

A farmer who managed to escape from the scene said the gunmen suddenly emerged from the bushes and intercepted their vehicle on their way to the Nursing Section of the institute.

Spokesman of the Oyo State Police Command, Ayanlade Olayinka confirmed the incident in a text message sent to journalists on Wednesday in Ibadan.

He said that one of the four victims was rescued and their vehicle was recovered.

He added that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Femi Haruna had directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, along with other tactical teams, to strengthen the Divisional Police (DPO) in Idi-Ayunre.

The spokesperson revealed that operators had begun intensive bush-combing operations to rescue the victims.

“Efforts continue to be made to rescue the remaining victims and arrest the perpetrators,” he said.
