Gunmen kill Police Inspector and three civilians in attack in Aba

Tragedy struck in Aba, Abia State, on Sunday, as gunmen launched a deadly attack on a police patrol team, resulting in the death of a Police Inspector and three civilians. The incident occurred along Mosque road near Ngwa road, where the attackers, who were travelling in a Toyota Sienna bus, opened fire on the police team.

According to reports, the police team, identified as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), quickly retaliated, engaging the attackers in a fierce gunfight. In the exchange of fire, Inspector Shehu Oyibo of the RRS and three civilians—Chika Godliveth, Onyeaturuchi Jonah, and Eniobong God’sgift Clement—were killed by stray bullets.

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that apart from the fatalities, two gunmen were killed while another escaped with gunshot wounds.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes and mounting casualties, indicating that more people may have been injured or killed in the attack.

In an official statement on Sunday, ASP Maureen Chinaka gave details of the incident: “Today, July 21, 2024, at about 11:28 am, police officers attached to the Rapid Response Force (RRS) Aba, Abia State Command, while on patrol along Ngwa Road near Mosque junction, Aba, were attacked by armed assailants in a grey Sienna vehicle. The gunmen opened fire on the police personnel, and the police officers repelled the attack, preventing what could have been a more deadly outcome.”

He continued, “Unfortunately, during the exchange of fire, two of the attackers were neutralized, while others escaped with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. Tragically, Inspector Shehu Oyibo and three civilians—Chika Godliveth, Onyenaturuchi Jonah, and Eniobong Godsgift Clement—fell victim to the bullets of the attackers. Their bodies have been deposited at the morgue, and investigation is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.”

ASP Chinaka assured the public of the enhanced security measures, with deployment at strategic locations across the state to protect lives and property. He urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity or individuals with gunshot wounds to law enforcement authorities.
