Gusau vows to continue supporting women’s football

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, reiterated that his administration is committed to providing more opportunities for women to enhance their capacity and also find gainful employment within the Nigerian football ecosystem as they develop.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the three-module CAF-C Licensed Coaching Course (for women only) in Abuja on Monday, Gusau said football is for everyone – men, women, young and old – hence the current NFF management will always support female coaches to secure employment in government, private or community clubs after developing their capacity to a certain level.

“FIFA has given a lot of importance to women’s football over the years and we are happy to follow their example. Women’s football continues to grow around the world and our country should be no different. Whatever we do, without training those who coach the female footballers, we are not doing anything significant. Those who coach the female players must continually improve their own ability in the knowledge of modern tactics and techniques to make our teams much better.

“This is the essence of the women-only CAF-C licence course. Next year we hope to run a CAF-B course and the year after that, perhaps a CAF-A course.”

Gusau promised that the men will not be neglected as there are plans for a CAF-C programme for them in a few weeks.

NFF Technical Director, Coach Augustine Eguavoen, commended the Federation leadership for always dealing favourably and promptly with all memoranda relating to coach training. He also confirmed that the programme consists of three modules – the first from July 15 to 25, which will be followed by a two-week internship for the participants between July 27 and August 7. The participants will return to Abuja for the second module, which is scheduled for August 12 to 20, after which they will undergo another two-week internship from August 23 to September 4.

The third module, which includes exams for participants, will take place from 9 to 19 September.

Dr Terry Babatunde Eguaoje, NFF Education Director, is part of the team of coach educators, which also includes coaches Isah Ladan Bosso, Wemimo Olanrewaju and Lanrence Ndaks.

Among the 30 participants are former Super Falcons stars Precious Dede, Joy Jegede, Esther Michael, Maureen Eke, Otas Ogbonmwan, Vera Okolo, Cecilia Nku, Taiwo Ajobiewe, Gloria Ofoegbu and Amenze Aighewi. Also participating are Barr, Victoria Nlemigbo and retired FIFA referee Folusho Ajayi.

NFF Secretary General, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, advised the participants to fully dedicate themselves to improving themselves through the programme as opportunities for qualified, competent and ambitious coaches abound in the Nigerian and African football environments.

Also at the event were NFF Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire; Director of Competitions, Ruth David; Deputy Technical Director, Mrs Faith Ben-Anuge; Assistant Technical Director, Abdulrafiu Yusuf; Technical Director, Garba Lawal; SA of GS, Mohammed Adebayo Ameenu; Director of Operations of the Nigeria Women Football League, Modupe Shabi; and NFF Head of Administration, Kut-Kut Fon.
