Harbel College gets University status.

The Liberian Senate unanimously approves the elevation of Harbel Community College in Mrgibi County to University status.

Capitol Hill, Liberia, July 19, 2024 –The Liberian Senate has voted unanimously to concur with the House of Representatives on the establishment of Margibi University.

The unanimous decision marks a pivotal moment in the educational landscape of the County and the nation at large.

The newly approved legislation, “AN ACT TO REPEAL THE 2012 ACT CREATING THE HARBEL COLLEGE AND TO ESTABLISH IN LIEU THEREOF MARGIBI UNIVERSITY AND GRANT IT A CHARTER,” received strong legislative support and reflects a consensus among lawmakers on the need to elevate educational institutions to meet modern challenges and opportunities.

The bill, originally introduced by Margibi County Electoral District 2 Representative Ivar K. Jones, garnered extensive deliberation and scrutiny from the Joint Committee on Education & Public Administration, Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims & Petitions, and Ways, Means, Finance & Budget. 

The comprehensive report recommends the establishment of Margibi University to replace the current Harbel College, underscoring the institution’s upgraded status and expanded educational mandate.
