Luka Modric’s goal could not give Croatia automatic qualification to the last 16 as a late equalizer helped Italy finish as group B runners-up.
Croatia led Italy 1-0 from the 55th minute after Modric scored within seconds after his penalty was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
After losing their first match to Spain and being held to a draw by Albania in their second, Croatia is in pole position to finish behind group winners Spain, who lead Albania 1-0.
But in the eighth minute of added time, Italy scored!

Italy took all three points, and would have progressed if they had drawn, and they got it in the final minutes through Mattia Zaccagni’s heartbreaking goal.
Following tonight’s results, England, France and the Netherlands have all progressed to the last 16 without playing.
All three teams are guaranteed at least third place in their group and have four points so they cannot be eliminated.
