Following internal disputes among members, the newly formed Joint Downstream and Midstream Committee specifically to investigate imports of contaminated petroleum products, unavailability of crude oil for domestic refineries and other energy security issues has been disbanded.
The development was announced in a statement by House Speaker, Rep. Akin Rotimi on Monday, who revealed that the decision was taken at the inauguration of the committee last Monday.
He said: “The DPR leadership has decided to disband the current ad-hoc Joint Downstream and Central Committee.
“Initially tasked with investigating imports of counterfeit petroleum products, unavailability of crude oil for domestic refineries, and other critical energy security issues, this committee will be replaced by a newly formed ad-hoc committee with the same mandate.”
Akin added: “To ensure the effectiveness and independence of this investigation, the new committee will consist of distinguished members selected based on their expertise, competence and integrity.
“The Board remains committed to addressing these important issues and ensuring thorough oversight. Further details on the operations of the new committee will be provided in due course.
Members of the House of Representatives appear to be at war over a proposed investigation into operations in the downstream and midstream sectors of the oil industry.
An ad-hoc committee led by the Chairman of the House of Representatives Downstream Petroleum Committee, Ikenga Ugochinyere, has called for the dismissal of the Group Executive Chairman of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mele Kyari, while another group of 50 lawmakers has called for his retention.
Lawmakers led by Billy Osawaru (Edo State) said calling for Kyari’s dismissal while investigations were ongoing was against parliamentary culture.
