House members demand immediate return of kidnapped medical students

The House of Representatives on Saturday condemned the kidnapping of 20 medical students in Benue State.

Gunmen on Thursday kidnapped the students who were travelling to a conference organised by the Catholic Medical and Dental Students Federation in Enugu.

The victims included 12 students from the University of Jos and eight from the University of Maiduguri.

The incident has caused an uproar in the country and many are demanding a swift response from security agencies.

In a statement by its spokesman, Rotimi Akin, the Green Chamber ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies to deploy all necessary resources to ensure the safe return of the students.

The statement read: “The safety of our medical students is paramount, and this incident is not just an attack on these young professionals, but also on the future of our healthcare system. We cannot afford to lose more lives to the insecurity that grips our country.

“No student should be afraid of carrying out their legal duties in this country. We demand strict action from our security agencies to bring these students home safely.”

“The Council remains committed to supporting initiatives that enhance the security and safety of all Nigerians and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Our thoughts and prayers are with the abducted students and their families. We call for immediate and decisive action to ensure their safe return.”
