After the conclave begins, the cardinals will not emerge from the Vatican until the new whale has been selected. The word “konklaf” comes from Latin, which means “with a key” – reference to isolation in which cardinals are stored.

They held a voting session at the Sistine chapel and slept at the Casa Santa Marta Hotel in the Vatican land.

The longest konklaf lasted almost three years, between 1268 and 1271. Some only lasted one day. The elected Pope Yohanes Paul in 1978 lasted less than three days. Cardinals Choosing Pope Francis in about two days.

While conclave is ongoing, Cardinals cannot communicate with the outside world. There is no telephone, the use of the internet or newspaper is permitted.

Except for the first day, when only one voting, Cardinals held two daily voting sessions until one candidate had the majority of two -thirds plus one. They were all sworn in confidentiality about voting.

White smoke?

So how do we know if the decision has been achieved? Yes, this is black smoke, white smoke.

If the cardinals have not yet reached the majority, cards and calculation sheets are placed on the stove and burned with additives to produce black smoke, showing the outside world that the whale has not been chosen.

Witnessing the smoke that arises from the top of Sistine’s chapel is something that is tradition, with Catholics gathered to the St. Peter field for the spectacle.

If there are no results achieved in three days, the session is suspended for a day to allow prayer and discussion. More ballots were then held until the majority of two -thirds were reached.

When enough Cardinals approved a candidate for the next Pope, the candidate was then asked whether he accepted and by which name he wanted to be known.

Then the ballot is burned as before, but with additives to produce white smoke.
