I did not betray Peter Obi, he betrayed Atiku —Okupe

N702M SCAM: Court sets date to hear Jonathan's ex-aide Okupe's application for medical trip abroad

Former Director-General of President Obi-Datti’s 2023 presidential campaign, Doyin Okupe, has responded to allegations by Peter Obi’s supporters, commonly known as Obidients, that he betrayed his leadership before and after the election.

Okupe, who spoke in an interview on Thursday, said rather than being a traitor, it was actually Obi who betrayed Atiku Abubakar after he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party candidate who was his running mate in the 2019 presidential election.

In the interview, Okupe narrated how he convinced Obi to leave the PDP when he realised the opposition party would not give him the presidential ticket and decided to support Obi’s presidential ambition after discussions with senior statesman, Pa Ayo Adebanjo in 2022.

He also admitted that it was unlikely that Labor could win the presidential election in 2023 because the party did not have the capacity to win a national election.

However, a former aide to President Goodluck Jonathan has made a shocking revelation that the Labour Party, like other parties, also rigged the 2023 elections but still failed to win.

Responding to Obi’s accusations of treason, Okupe said:

“Atiku brought Peter Obi into national politics and he continues to betray him because of his personal interests. What united Peter Obi and me was stopping another Northern candidate from succeeding Buhari.

“I have been around since 1978, my political journey is not related to Peter Obi and I can tell my truth,” he joked.

Furthermore, he said:

“We don’t have the structure to win a national election, we don’t have agents in about 80% of the polling stations, how can we win an election that way, Tinubu clearly won the 2023 election, every party was rigged including the Labour Party

“Our initial ambition and the main reason for leaving PDP was to be Southerners and Tinubu has won and I am very happy.

“Talking about betrayal, it was not me who betrayed Peter Obi, but Peter Obi who betrayed Atiku Abubakar who was his teacher,” he said.
