Former Military Head of the State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Retd.), Has revealed that he was undergoing medical treatment at the same London Hospital where former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday, July 13.
In an interview with Channels Television, Abdulsalami, 83, confirmed that he was dismissed just before Buhari’s death and described his companion as a trusted and principled leader.
“Unfortunately, we were in the hospital together, but I had run out,” he said. “When I heard the news about the repayment, I quickly went there to respectively with my family and see what could be done to make the body ready to be brought home.”
Reflecting on their old relations from six decades, the former military ruler said, “My relationship with Buhari stepped as far as 1962. We joined the military, he was my senior, and during the unfortunate civil war, we fought in the same sector.”
He described Buhari as “a very quiet but very honest man,” added, “You can trust Buhari with anything on this earth and he will not betray you.”
Abdulsalami also praised Buhari’s anti-corruption attitude during his military and civilian tenure, highlighted the president’s late campaign regarding the War Campaign against Indiscipline (WAI) in the 1980s.

“When he became a Democratic president, he tried his best once again to ensure that he was fighting corruption,” he said. “Unfortunately, some officers who serve with him were found wanting. They did not do as much as expected from them. Hopefully he will rest in peace.”
Describing the death of Buhari as “a big blow to Nigeria,” Abdulsalami praised the President of Bola Tinubu for sending Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to accompany the late president of the body at home.
“Our president, Tinubu, has asked the Vice President to come so he can escort the corpse,” he stressed.
The former military ruler, who led Nigeria from 1998 to 1999 and oversees the country’s transition to democracy, said he believes Buhari’s death marks a significant turning point in the country’s political track.
“With the repayment of President Buhari, politics in Nigeria will certainly change – I hope to be better,” he added.
Buhari, who died after a short disease at the age of 82, will be buried in his hometown, Daura, Katsina state, on Tuesday, July 15.
