ICPC indicted El-Rufai, 3 days after burying his mother

The Independent Commission on Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses (ICPC) has arraigned former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai before the Kaduna State High Court on various corruption-related charges.

This comes just three days after the former governor buried his late mother, who died in Egypt.

The former governor was charged together with a businessman, Amadu Sule, on charges of abuse of office, fraud, attempted fraud and giving improper benefits.

The presiding judge, Justice Darius Khobo, adjourned the trial until April 10.

El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpong Abang, declined to comment on the development, stating that further legal proceedings were ongoing and additional filings were required.

Meanwhile, journalists are prohibited from accessing the courtroom during the trial.

Security was beefed up around the courthouse, with armed troops deployed along Anguwan Sarki to Jalan Kawo.

Restrictions on movement on certain roads cause severe traffic jams, leaving passengers stranded amid high fuel prices.

He had been in ICPC custody since February 19 until his temporary release on March 28 on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother in Cairo, Egypt, last Friday. He was buried on Sunday in Abuja.
