ICPC promises to take action against corrupt members of the DPR

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Tuesday vowed to take action against corrupt state lawmakers.

ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu, said at the opening of a three-day capacity building workshop for Jigawa State legislators.

Aliyu, who expressed concern over the level of corruption in the country, stressed the need for legislators to live honestly and be seen to do so in all their public and private functions.

The chairman reiterated the commission’s readiness to partner with state Assemblies to combat corruption.

He said that the KPK will continue to carry out its three mandates, namely law enforcement, prevention, public education, and mass mobilization in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

He said: “We stand ready to partner with state legislatures to advance the fight against corruption as we have done and continue to do with other agencies and levels of government.

“However, we will successfully use the big stick when the opportunity demands us to do so.”

He argued that the relevance of legislative institutions in a democracy cannot be overemphasized.

“The oversight function is very important to ensure that the intention of the legislature in making laws that will improve the living standards of the poor is reflected in the performance of the executive function.

“As important as its role in government is, the state legislature must endeavor to exercise its oversight function within the scope of the law establishing the House of Representatives.

“Members of parliament must act honestly and must be seen to do so in all their public and private functions.”

The ICPC chairman said the interest and unity of the state as demonstrated by President Bola Tinubu’s administration must override the personal and collective interests of members of the state House of Assembly.

“The principle of separation of powers must be respected and adhered to; the encroachment of executive and judicial functions will undermine democracy and good governance.

“In addition, the legislature is expected to detect waste, inefficiency, ineffectiveness, corruption and mismanagement of public resources.

“However, these functions can only be effectively carried out by the legislative body of government if it implements transparency and accountability in its operations; this is why this workshop is so important,” he said.
