ICPC vows to enforce Supreme Court ruling on local council autonomy

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Dr Musa Aliyu said on Thursday that the commission will ensure strict enforcement of the Supreme Court ruling on local government autonomy.

Aliyu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), stated this at the One-Day National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) Members’ Hybrid Interactive Forum in Abuja.

The Supreme Court on July 11 granted financial autonomy to the country’s 774 local governments.

The commission chairman, who warned those planning to go against the law to check his records, said the commission would ensure compliance with the Supreme Court verdict at all costs.

He said: “Local governments must be led by people democratically elected from the grassroots.

“You need to make sure that those who are elected are people who are thinking about us; people who will carry out their responsibilities effectively and responsibly.

“It is not the people who are going to divert public funds, and ICPC, as a commission, we will make sure that we enforce compliance no matter what.”

He said the constitution was clear on the matter, adding that the commission would ensure its implementation was in accordance with the letter.

“We must protect the integrity of our courts. I will not stand by and watch a few people destroy them. Not during my term.

“They can do it if I’m not here, but not while I’m here. I’m not afraid. I’m determined.

“I will protect the integrity of the court. I will lead this fight. I surrender to God. No one can do anything to me unless God allows it,” he added.
