In the midst of complaints, the Nigerian government closes the airport of Ibiam Int’l to improve the emergency runway

The Federal Nigerian government through the Federal Nigerian Airport Authority (FAAN), has announced the temporary closure of the International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, to improve the emergency runway.

This development was announced by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection from the Agency in a statement posted on his X platform on Saturday morning, April 19, 2025.

Previously, the Nigerian airline, Air Peace, had announced the suspension of all flights to Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, citing security issues over the airport runway conditions.

In a statement released on Friday, April 18, 2025 and signed by the Head of Corporate Communication, Dr. Ejike Ndiulo, the airline said they were forced to stop the operation to Enugu because of the continuous runway problem that had caused a large disorder of the flight.

“We regret telling you that all flights scheduled to the international airport will be, Enugu is temporarily suspended due to security issues,” the statement said.

“The situation of the enugu runway has caused a big disturbance to broadcast peace flights, so the decision for temporarily postponed further flights to the airport until further notification.”

React to this, Faan has now closed the airport which revealed that there was a sudden and significant rupture on the surface of the asphalt on the critical part of the runway.

“Therefore, emergency improvements will be carried out on the runway section from April 22 to May 6, 2025.

“In accordance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Nigerian airport authority (FAAN), therefore, has closed the runway during this period.

“As part of the Faan commitment to the safety of passengers and modernization of airport facilities, the runway will not be open to landing or taking off during the rehabilitation period.

“Faan is interesting for all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation so far. All flights to the airport will be diverted to the nearest airport. We sincerely apologize for the late and unexpected notification regarding this closing. Faan” said the statement.
