Indonesian Navy rescues 8 victims of human trafficking, 2 fishermen drown

The Nigerian Navy has rescued eight female victims of human trafficking in the country.

Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the victims were rescued between Saturday and Tuesday.

He said officers also rescued two drowned fishermen and arrested eight stowaways in Nigerian waters.

According to Adams-Aliu, the feat was recorded by Navy units across the country’s maritime regions in various operations.

He added that a sea robbery attempt was also thwarted during the same period.

The spokesman said: “On Saturday, the Nigerian Navy Rapid Response Team, Forward Operating Base Badagry, intercepted a wooden passenger boat with eight women aged between 18 and 23 years en route to Benin Republic.

“After interrogation, it became clear that the victims were trafficked by an agent who has not been identified.

“The victims were handed over to the National Agency for the Eradication of Human Trafficking (BNPT) while further investigations to identify the agents and human trafficking syndicates are ongoing.

“Personnel of the Forward Operating Base IBAKA in Akwa Ibom on Wednesday intercepted suspected sea robbers who attempted to rob a supply vessel along River Uyenghe in Mbo Local Government Area.

“The robbers opened fire on the Navy troops, prompting them to retaliate with heavy fire.

“The robbers then retreated to the river and the robbery attempt was thwarted.

“Also on July 12, personnel from Forward Operating Base LEKKI rescued two fishermen who drowned around the Lekki Anchorage Area, about 10 nautical miles from the Dangote Refinery in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State.

“The findings indicate that the fishermen were fishing in the area when their boat capsized due to bad sea conditions.”
