The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has stated that the petition seeking the withdrawal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uuduaghan, who represented the KOGI central senatorial district, has failed to meet the constitutional requirements needed for the action.
In an official statement released on Thursday through its X -grip, Inec confirmed that the withdrawal effort did not meet the provisions of Article 69 (a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“The petition for the withdrawal of the senator representing the KOGI Center Senatorial District has not met the requirements of Section 69 (a) The 1999 Federal Nigerian Republican Constitution (as amended),” said the Commission.

What does this mean for Kogi Central
This decision effectively ended the withdrawal process, which confirmed the Mandate of Akpoti-Uuduaghan as the selected senator. Under Nigeria’s law, so that the withdrawal was successful, he had to gather support from at least half of the registered voters in the affected electoral area, followed by a referendum conducted by Inec. The commission’s decision shows that the applicants failed to meet this threshold.
While the specific reasons for the withdrawal petition are still not disclosed, the results underline the strict legal and procedural standards needed to remove the elected parliamentary members through popular voting.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, a prominent political figure, has been vocal in problems about governance, infrastructure, and human rights in the state of Kogi. With an unsuccessful withdrawal effort, he is expected to continue his legislature without further legal interference.
