Inec warned politicians, said the early 2027 campaign violated the Election Law

The Independent National Election Commission (Inec) has issued a strong warning to the political parties and individuals involved in the premature campaign before the 2027 General Election, describing the action as illegal and contrary to the provisions of the Election Law.

The warning followed the wave of the new public political declaration and the initial campaign activities by several politicians who observed the poll 2027.

Overcoming Development, Head of Press Secretary for the Chairperson of Inec, Bpk. Rotimi Oyekanmi, emphasized that the commission had not released an official schedule or schedule for the 2027 general election.

“So far, the party’s preliminary election has not been held, and there are no political parties that nominate candidates for the next general election,” Oyekanmi said.

While recognizing the right of citizens to freely discuss political issues and future elections, he draws a sharp line between political discourse and the actual campaign.

“Every open campaign or vote that can be divided for the 2027 general election is not only inappropriate but is also a violation of the Election Law,” he said.

Citing certain legal provisions, Ohekanmi explained, “Part 94 (1) of the 2022 Election Law stipulates that the campaign period in public by political parties for elections will begin 150 days before the voting day and end 24 hours before that day.”

He further noted, “Part 95 (1) This law also clearly stated that a candidate and his party would campaign for elections in accordance with the rules and regulations determined by Inec.”

Ohekanmi added that all political parties were reminded about this regulation during the last quarterly consultative meeting Inec and was expected to fully comply with the law.

With the 2027 elections still more than a year, the commission urges political actors to respect the time line and refrain from premature election activities that can interfere with the democratic process.
