In order to offer solutions to the growing insecurity in the country, the Council of traditional northern sovereigns was, Tuesday, hosted in Maiduguri.
The meeting, which was the seventh meeting of the Executive Committee of the Council, was hosted by the Governor of the State of Borno, prof. Babagana Zulum, with the important agenda which is a resolution on how to deal with the growing insecurity that afflicts northern Nigeria.
The meeting with the theme, “the greatest security as Panacea for the stability and development of the North” was declared open by the vice -president, Senator Kashim Shettimo, represented by the governor Babagana Zulum.
In his observations, Zulum has highlighted the safety and construction of peace, agriculture and the empowerment of young people as critical pillars of sustainable development in the northern region.
The governor also invited all interested parties to focus on the supply of opportunities for young people in northern Nigeria. He said: “Our youth population is great, energetic and anxious to contribute, but many are without opportunities. This void is dangerous. We must invest heavily in the acquisition of skills, in professional education, in digital innovation and entrepreneurship. The authorized young people are only less vulnerable to crime or radicalization, but also become active development agents.”
Zulum also stressed that agriculture had remained the anchor of economic salvation for the North. Therefore, an deliberated effort is needed to improve agricultural activities throughout the region.
He said: “With a vast seminative land and an expert population in agriculture, agriculture is our greatest opportunity. However, insecurity has churned out farmers and stopped rural productivity. We must protect our agricultural land and support modern agricultural practices to restore support and reduce dependencies. Zuli.
He added: “On behalf of the government and the good people of the state of Borno, I assure you of our commitment to peace, justice and shared progress. Together, with faith and determination, we will reconstruct the North physically, socially and economic”.
For his part, the president of the traditional northern sovereigns and the sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, explained that the meeting in Borno had to strengthen the unity between the northern states and deliberate on the situation in the region to support political leadership in facing a series of problems throughout the North.
The director for national security, the head of defense and the police inspector were represented.
The president of the Northern Governors and Governor of Gombe, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, represented by his deputy, Manassah Daniel Jatau, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Umar Garbai, among many other emirs through the 19 states of the North Region, were also present.
