The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Wednesday, vehemently denied allegations made by the Nigerian Army that its members kidnapped and attacked a soldier sent to spy on Biafran movements in the Southeast.
IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful dismissed the claims as “propaganda” and a “self-initiated crime” by the Nigerian Army leadership.
Powerful stressed that IPOB has never forced, and will never force, Igbo people to resign from the Nigerian Army and other security agencies. “IPOB can only appeal to the conscience of Biafrans but will never force anything on anyone at gunpoint,” he said.
The controversy began when the Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, accused Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed IPOB leader, of circulating a video showing the torture of retired Corporal Toriola Adewale.
However, Powerful argued that the video was a “false flag operation” and was not produced by IPOB.

“The Biafran nation that IPOB defends is a nation that guarantees and respects human rights, which guides its people through reason,” explained Powerful.
He also criticized the Nigerian Army, saying that “the armed forces have reduced themselves to mere gossip on social media.”
“Although IPOB has called for Biafrans serving in the Nigerian security agencies to resign, IPOB has never and will never force our brothers and sisters in the Nigerian security agencies to resign under pressure.
“The so-called video of the kidnapping of the spy soldiers is yet another false flag operation by the Nigerian Army and their provocateurs to continue their onslaught on Ndigbo. The Nigerian Army has reduced itself to mere social media gossip.”
