Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed that former manager Frank Lampard played a crucial role in reviving his career during a difficult period in Everton.
Speaking in the Podcast Inside Scoop, the midfielder reflected on how Lampard’s belief and tactical trust helped him rediscover his form after a low point in his career.
“Lampard revived my career,” Iwobi said. “One of the Affons who sent me, returned, and Rafa Benítez told me that I would go on loan. I was having a mare, but then Benítez left. Lampard told me that I would go to another country.”
Iwobi, however, rejected the movement and decided to stay and fight for his place.
“I said: ‘I’m not doing that, I prefer to stay here and fight for my place.’ Lampard gives everyone a chance.
I said: “The previous managers have told me to put the ball and run.”
The midfielder explained how Lampard encouraged him to play with more freedom and confidence.
“Then he said: ‘No, do yours.’ Then he put me in the center of the field, where I liked being on the ball.
Iwobi also talked about his exit from Arsenal in 2019, a movement that initially did not anticipate.
While he does not regret, he revealed that the transfer was a surprise.
He revealed that the record firm of Nicolas Pepé arsenal for £ 72 million led the club to sell.
“It is good to know that they [Everton] Do you love me, what do you think? I said, I don’t know, I have 50/50.
“Then my agent said: ‘Alex, Arsenal has already delivered in the doctor’ [Arsenal]You may want you to leave because they need to sell someone. I was crazy, I was like, “Arsenal wants to let me go, I guess it’s time for a new challenge.”
Product of the Arsenal Academy, Iwobi made 149 senior appearances for the gunners, scoring 15 goals and providing 23 assists.
